Athletics

  • Welcome!  At Memorial Middle School, we embrace the idea of athletic participation and encourage your involvement in our offerings.  Working with the many young men and women over the years who have gone before you, who have participated on our athletic teams under the Memorial banner, we have come to see that:

    • Athletics are an essential aspect of the total school program that supports, enhances, and extends the educational and growth experiences learned in the classroom.  It provides participants the opportunity to experience personal growth and development, both physically and mentally.
    • Athletic participation gives the opportunity to learn to accept personal responsibilities for success and failure and to recognize the limitations and strengths of both.  It also aids in developing motivation, self-discipline, self-confidence, and leadership skills.

Not only have we seen the power of athletic involvement with our own eyes but researchers across the nation have also shown that athletes do better than their counterparts who are not involved.  The development of these indicators that produce immediate and enduring advantage for our athletes include:

    • Socially, athletes identify better with their school, realizing a greater sense of belongingness, having better attendance records, lower dropout rates, and fewer discipline problems.
    • Individually, research has indicated that athletes have more self-discipline and self-confidence.  They have more positive health behaviors and sense of self-worth.
    • They have a greater capacity for teamwork, sportsmanship, and hard work.  They are more advanced in characteristics of goal setting, leadership, independence, initiative, fair play, and acceptance of others.
    • Involvement also fosters greater school spirit and develops school pride.

All told, athletes gain an advantage simply because they choose to be involved.  So again, welcome to Memorial - and Go Colts.
